The calf’s ability to efficiently absorb antibodies is greatest during the first hours after birth and declines as the gut moves toward closure. At the same time, first-milking colostrum contains the greatest concentration of antibodies and other biologically active components before they begin to become diluted in subsequent milkings.

A cow develops antibodies based on what she has been exposed to throughout her life, along with factors such as nutrition and management. Those antibodies can then be transferred to her calf through colostrum.
But biology isn’t perfectly consistent.
The specific antibodies present in colostrum can vary from cow to cow. Even two cows producing colostrum with similar measures of overall quality may not provide the same antibody profile.
Understanding that natural variation leads to another question: What do we actually know about the antibodies being provided in the first feeding?
Colostrum naturally varies from cow to cow, and similar IgG levels don’t necessarily mean the same antibody profile. Looking beyond the total IgG number provides another layer of understanding about what is actually being provided in the first feeding.

Immunoglobulin G, or IgG, is an important measure of colostrum quality. But total IgG tells us how much IgG is present—not which specific antibodies are represented within it.
That distinction matters.
Current testing can identify the presence of genetic material from a virus or bacteria, but it isn’t designed to measure the amount or activity of specific antibodies in colostrum.
What is provided in the first feeding is only part of the equation. How it is delivered also deserves consideration.
When a calf suckles, the feeding response stimulates the esophageal, or reticular, groove. This creates a pathway that allows liquid colostrum to bypass the rumen and move into the abomasum and ultimately the small intestine, where antibody absorption occurs during the critical early window.
Other forms delivered separately from the normal feeding response introduce another variable: when will those materials reach the area where they can be utilized?
With a limited window for efficient antibody absorption, both route and timing matter.
Colostrum will always have natural variability. But as our ability to understand and characterize antibodies advances, there are opportunities to bring greater consistency to what is provided in the first feeding.
