Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 was specifically designed to help stimulate and maintain feed intake in sows and gilts at farrowing time. In extensive trials and field observations in sows and gilts that were not consuming the desired amount of farrowing ration, Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 was readily consumed and helped stimulate feed intake when administered as a top dress on the feed. In tests to evaluate the acceptance of Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 in sows and gilts that were eating no feed or very scant amounts, Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 was readily accepted and consumed by the majority of sows and gilts when the product was fed by itself in the feeding trough or on the floor of the farrowing crate.
The potential nutrient or feed intake enhancement benefits of Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 have led to the development and use of an oral feeder that was specifically designed to help administer nutrients and fluids to sows and gilts that are totally inappetent or consuming no feed at farrowing time.
CAUSES FOR REDUCED INTAKE
One of the primary factors contributing to reduced milk flow and light weaning weights is inadequate nutrient intake or lack of sufficient energy by the lactating sow and gilt. Veterinarians, nutritionists and pork producers are in general agreement that the greater the feed intake during lactation, the better or greater the weight of the young pig at weaning. Constipation, infections with subsequent elevated body temperatures of the sow or gilt, environment, animal comfort and age of the young gilt at farrowing have all been recognized as contributing causes for reduced feed intake. Sows or gilts with elevated temperatures should be treated as directed by a veterinarian as soon as possible to minimize the impact of the infection as it relates to milk flow.
Constipation problems can also be minimized with the appropriate use of a natural laxative such as Mo’ Milk™ Feed Mix or Mo’ Milk™ Top Dress. Environment, feed quality, adequate water flow and genetics should be constantly evaluated and appraised as to their implications on feed intake and milk flow. There are many factors that may have an impact on feed intake at farrowing time including ketonemia. In field trials with Sow & Gilt Restart One-4, a high percentage of sows that showed no signs of infectious systemic disease or constipation were positive for varying levels of ketone bodies basis a urine analysis. In these animals with varying degrees of ketosis, the Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 showed a definite response in regard to feed intake when administered for one to four feedings.
APPLICATIONS OF SOW & GILT RESTART ONE-4
Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 provides a unique blend of skim milk, whey, animal and vegetable fat that have been acidified with Swine BlueLite®. In field trials, sows and gilts showed a much better response in regard to feed intake when these energy sources were combined with Swine BlueLite. This improved feed intake is attributed to the palatable, gentle acidification action of the Swine BlueLite, thereby helping to restore the normal digestive environment for animals that have been off feed for several days.
Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 is also fortified with electrolytes, vitamins, yeast, enzymes, and microbial cultures in an effort to help maintain digestion and to provide vitamin and electrolyte reserves in the inappetent sow or gilt.
TOP DRESSING – ORAL FEEDERS
Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 should be used as a top dress on the feed for sows and gilts that are still eating feed. It can be administered in the drinking water for sows and gilts that are drinking a normal amount of fluid. For sows and gilts that are not eating and drinking at all, Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 can be administered with a special oral feeder that places the suspension at the back of the mouth or throat. In field tests with Sow & Gilt Restart One-4, two out of three sows readily consumed the suspension if the oral feeder was gently inserted or rolled into the corner of the mouth.
Most sows and gilts readily accept an oral feeder if it is gently placed against their body behind the shoulder and then gradually slid forward in contact with the body until reaching the mouth area. Several different oral feeders are available through distributors serving the veterinary profession and the animal health industry.
Sows and gilts that are constipated and off feed should be fed Sow & Gilt Restart One–4 in combination with Mo’ Milk® Feed Mix. Mo’ Milk® Top Dress and Sow & Gilt Restart One-4 are highly compatible and make an excellent free-flowing suspension when administered through an oral feeder.
