When sows and gilts are first moved into farrowing crates, pens, or stalls, they often suffer from constipation or have reduced feed intake.  To help sows and gilts after farrowing, provide Mo' Milk Top Dress to stimulate feed intake and to naturally ease constipation.  Mo'Milk Top Dress provides extra nutrient fortification and natural laxative action to help a sow or gilt to resume eating rations and achieve maximum milk production.

Mo' Milk Top Dress is an all-natural laxative formula that contains added vitamins and electrolytes to help boost absorption of essential nutrients as constipation is relieved.  Mo' Milk Top Dress contains high levels of energy needed for milk flow, including fat, dextrose, lactose, sucrose, fructose, and whey.  Mo' Milk Top Dress is specifically design for individual feeding and top dressing.  For over 30 years, producers have found that by top dressing Mo'Milk Top Dress on farrowing-lactation rations, they are able to encourage sows and gilts to readily consume feed while also reducing complications associated with constipation.

WHEN TO USE:

  • To encourage sows and gilts to readily consume feed while also reducing complications associated with constipation
  • For individual use for the problem sow or gilt
  • After farrowing, feed for three or four days, or for as long as signs of constipation exist
  • To help improve feed intake after farrowing
  • For sows and gilts to help naturally reduce constipation

Mo’ Milk Feed Mix and Mo’ Milk Top Dress were specifically designed for use at farrowing time to help alleviate problems of constipation with specific ingredients that provide a safe, natural laxative action. These natural ingredients produce a soothing, mucilaginous, stool-softening action that helps facilitate normal elimination and bowel movements without the potentially harsh, irritating action of many chemicals that can lead to dehydration, thereby impeding normal lactation or milk flow.

Mo’ Milk Feed Mix and Mo’ Milk Top Dress are easy and convenient to use in all types of farrowing facilities in that Mo’ Milk Feed Mix is primarily designed for feed mixing, while Mo’ Milk Top Dress is primarily intended for individual feeding or top dressing. Mo’ Milk Feed Mix is economical to use for herd treatment prior to farrowing, and Mo’ Milk Top Dress, with its pleasant, sweet taste and high concentration of natural laxative ingredients, provides for an easy way to treat the individual sow or gilt.

CONSTIPATION
One of the primary causes of agalactia and lactation failure is intestinal stasis or constipation. Many sows and gilts encounter this problem in the farrowing crate due to lack of exercise, poor appetite, and changes of environment-management. Sows or gilts that are constipated for a significant period of time have poorer digestion and feed utilization. Lactating animals in this condition frequently develop hypoglycemia (reduced blood sugar) and depressed milk flow. Inadequate levels of blood sugar impede and disrupt normal milk production thereby causing nursing piglets to suffer frominadequate nutrition. Sows or gilts in this condition frequently develop excess udder edema (caking), further compounding abnormal milk flow.

CONVENTIONAL CONSTIPATION TREATMENTS
Many treatments have been used to help alleviate constipation at farrowing time. Chemicals such as magnesium, sodium and potassium salts, when increased in the feed or ration, have a cathartic action that draws water in the intestinal tract-bowel. With the swelling of the bowel with fluid drawn from the normal body tissues and mammary gland, evacuation can be initiated by chemical salts. Chemicals are an effective laxative, but can have a deleterious action as a tolerance may develop in a short time. This increasing tolerance requires a greater chemical intake for laxative action and can lead to dehydration. Milk is composed of 82-88% water, and with excessive chemical cathartic action, milk flow can be impaired due to dehydration. On many farms, chemicals are used at three to five times the initial level after several weeks of feeding, due to increasing tolerance. Many chemicals can also have an irritative action in the digestive tract, which can present a compounding health problem in swine herds where intestinal infections may be present at farrowing time.

High fiber diets including bran, alfalfa and other similar feed ingredients can reduce constipation but should not be overdone as they reduce the energy level of the ration essential for optimum milk flow. High energy ingredients, like fat, help produce adequate levels of blood glucose and milk lactose for maximum milk production and are thought to help prevent constipation to some degree, but are of limited value in the treatment of severe constipation.

MODE OF ACTION
The active ingredients in Mo’ Milk Feed Mix and Mo’ Milk Top Dress provide a soothing, mucilaginous, lubricating action in the digestive tract that facilitates normal bowel movement without dehydrating the sow or gilt. This lubricating action can easily be demonstrated by mixing 2 tablespoons of Mo’ Milk Top Dress with several ounces of water in a small glass. Within minutes, the Mo’ Milk Top Dress will form an oil-slippery, lubricating film on the walls of the glass just as it does on the lining of the digestive tract when it comes in contact with liquid ingesta. This lubricating, mucilaginous action helps produce a soft, oily stool in the sow or gilt to help facilitate normal elimination without creating a severe, watery stool that can lead to dehydration. Mo’ Milk Feed Mix, in addition to its natural laxative action, also provides electrolyte, vitamin and trace mineral fortification to help assure adequate intake of essential nutrients at farrowing. This electrolyte fortification helps provide for normal tissue fluid electrolyte balance to reduce the chances for udder-caking edema.

PALATABILITY AND TASTINESS
Mo’ Milk Feed Mix, when mixed with feed, is a palatable mixture of active, natural laxative agents with extra vitamins and trace minerals. Field experience with Mo’ Milk Feed Mix consistently indicates excellent feed intake and good mothering on the part of sows or gilts when Mo’ Milk Feed Mix is added to the ration from 14 days prior to farrowing until pigs are 7-10 days old.

Mo’ Milk Top Dress was specifically designed to provide the same action of the Mo’ Milk Feed Mix in a tasty top dress form for the farmer who didn’t mix the Mo’ Milk Feed Mix into the farrowing ration, and to help stimulate feed intake in the sow or gilt not consuming enough feed at farrowing time. Mo’ Milk Feed Mix is palatable and readily consumed but does not have the pleasant, sweet taste of Mo’ Milk Top Dress to help entice sows or gilts to eat. In field trials with Mo’ Milk Top Dress, farrowing house managers have reported that if sows or gilts don’t eat or consume Mo’ Milk Top Dress, the animals would likely be suffering from some other factor like a severe infection that caused or contributed to the problem of feed refusal or inappetence. The tastiness of Mo’ Milk Top Dress is readily evident when one touches a little on the finger and places it on the tongue, or by feeding it to a few animals as they are placed into the farrowing crate for the first time.

MO’ MILK TOP DRESS FEEDING DIRECTIONS
1. Feed MO’ MILK TOP DRESS to all gilts and sows on the first feeding when gilts and sows are moved into the farrowing crates, pens or stalls.
2. For sows-gilts showing signs of constipation, top dress one scoopful (approximately 4 ounces) on top of the gestation-farrowing ration. Continue feeding MO’ MILK TOP DRESS at this rate on each feeding until stools return to the desired consistency.
3. To help stimulate feed intake in sows or gilts that are constipated, off feed or eating less than the normal amount expected, mix MO’ MILK TOP DRESS with a quart of warm water or milk. Shake or stir well and pour suspension of MO’ MILK TOP DRESS over the feed in trough or bowl and continue feeding.
