Bovine BlueLite Pellets is a palatable and buffered source of electrolytes that includes potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium to name a few. Combined with energy sources like dextrose, sucrose, fructose and others, Bovine BlueLite Pellets provides the nutrients necessary to help recover from dehydration and help restore cow health for reproduction, milk production and averting many metabolic issues. Summary:
Bovine BlueLite®Pellets are an electrolyte with multiple energy sources, fluid balancing osmolytes, and essential vitamins and nutrients. It is used for dairy cattle in heat stress and post-calving. A trial was conducted on a commercial Florida dairy to study the effects of feeding Bovine BlueLite Pellets during heat stress. Cows receiving 6 oz. of Bovine BlueLite Pellets produced 2.2 lbs more milk per day than control cows. Primiparous cows had a 3 to 5.4 pound milk response during this trial.

Study Design:
A feeding trial was conducted at Dakin Dairy in Myakka City, Florida in May, 2011. Two pens of lactating Holstein cows were assigned to two treatments: control (C) or Bovine BlueLite Pellets (B). Both multiparous (M) and primiparous (P) cows were  utilized for this study. Experimental diets were fed for 21 days. Days in milk averaged 195 and 205 +/- 3 days for C and Btreatments, respectively. Average DIM for M cows were 199 and P cows were 201 DIM.

Cows were housed in a six-row free-stall barn. The C group had 197 cows in a 450 ft x 50 ft pen with 24 (6’) fans. Group B had 275 cows in a 490 ft x 40 ft pen with 9 (6’) fans. Fans were mounted above the stalls and ran constantly. A sprinkler system was used in each pen and operated for 3 minutes and was idle for 9 minutes.

Cows were fed similar diets for three weeks prior to the start of trial. Diets were mixed as a total-mixed-ration and consisted of corn silage, chopped hay, and a grain, protein and mineral mix. Cows were fed twice daily and milked three times daily.

Six cows from each treatment group were monitored for rectal temperatures twice weekly during the weeks of the trial. Daily weather observations were gathered from the Sarasota, Florida airport. Statistics were run using the PROC Mixed procedure of SAS® and data are reported as LSMeans. Individual cow was considered the experimental unit and each cow’s average milk yield for the week prior to the study initiation was utilized as a covariate.

Results:
During the trial, average minimum and maximum ambient temperatures were 66.7º and 85.1ºF, respectively. Relative humidity averaged 69º and dewpoint was 64.4º F. High ambient temperatures averaged 86.1º, 86.5º, and 82.3ºF for the three weeks of the trial. Temperature Heat Index (THI) averaged 77.2ºF.

A total of 437 cows were enrolled in the experiment. The  C group consisted of 66 P cows and 117 M cows, and the B group consisted of 23 P cows and 231 M cows. Average parities were 2.38 vs. 2.74 (P< 0.05) for the C and B treatment, respectively. Body temperatures did not differ for the C and B treatments (101.2 vs. 101.3°F).

Compared to C cows, milk production was increased 2.2 lbs/day in the B-fed cows across all cows (Figure 1, P<0.02). Bovine BlueLite Pellets increased milk production starting the first week on trial and the largest production difference occurred on the 3rd week of the experiment (Figure 2), as B cows milk 3.0 more pounds than C cows.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There was a treatment by parity effect (P<0.08) on milk yield (Figure 3). First lactation animals fed B produced 3.9 lb more than C heifers while the milk yield response was less pronounced (0.7 lbs) in M animals fed B.

Both M and P cows had a positive response to the Bovine BlueLite® Pellets (Figure 4). Multiparous cows receiving Bovine BlueLite® Pellets had a 0.5 to 0.8 lb increase in milk production and P cows had a 3 to 5.4 lb average milk increase through all three weeks on trial.

Conclusion:
In a commercial and controlled experiment, Bovine BlueLite Pellets fed at a 6 oz. feeding rate increased milk production by 2.2 lbs for both M and P cows. For both parities, the increase in milk production occurred within the first week of treatment. This increase was more pronounced in the P cows as they had a 3 to 5.4 lb milk response throughout the trial and the increase became more pronounced with advancing week. Heat-stressed cows receiving Bovine BlueLite® Pellets produced more milk compared to controls.
